I'm trying to work, but what I'm really doing is listening to the NPR coverage of the inaugural. I've never been this excited for a transition of power.

As I mentioned in [livejournal.com profile] rikibeth's LJ, Rick Warren mistranslated the Sh'ma in his invocation. The Sh'ma, arguably the most sacred prayer in the Jewish religion.

Hear, oh Israel
The Lord our God
The Lord is one

Not, as Warren said, "The Lord is our God." (emphasis his)

That simple change makes a significant difference to the meaning of the prayer. A difference that, I believe, says a lot about this man's belief system. And it hurt my head.

Later on, however, in Obama's inaugural address, he listed "nonbelievers" in with the mix of Americans of various faiths. THIS is my president. I'm fine with him talking about God in his address, as it pertains to him, as long as he allows me and my beliefs to hold the same level of importance.
