Nessun Dorma

I've been watching/listening to various people performing Nessun Dorma over lunch.  There are some fabulous singers out there but, so far, I still like Luciano the best.  Andrea Bocelli comes a close second.  I think I'll look for more of him...

Pavarotti
and again
Bocelli
Mario Del Monaco
Frank Tenaglia
Placido Domingo
Paul Potts (Britain's Got Talent)  I'm not as enamored of this guy as many people appear to be.  I feel as though he isn't as in control of his voice as are the professionals.  But, wow, for a carphone salesman!  (and Simon's response is priceless)
Manowar!

I found a couple of women singing it (including Aretha!), but it really loses something when it's not in the male timbre.

There is something about Bocelli's voice that sounds more ethereal to me than Pavarotti's. Even in the quiet moments of the aria, Pavarotti's power comes through. And sometimes I like the ethereal thing. But, yeah, he's the classic. :)

What I liked about Paul Potts was not any objective comparison between him and a professional opera singer, which he clearly isn't. What I liked was how unexpected his voice was after you see his personality, and the fact that he probably has almost no real training. But, my understanding is that in each round of the show he kept singing the same aria. Which left me wondering if he'd just learned to somehow sing that really well, but wouldn't be able to sing something else. That, to me, would be the important line of demarcation between a professional and a really passionate amateur.

That being said, I'm glad such a sweet, self-deprecating guy won the money, and not some obnoxious publicity hound.

Oh, he won the competition? How cool!

I like the metallic edge on Pavarotti's voice. It's the thing that gives me chills about a good tenor aria. :)

And that's precisely the quality in typical operatic singing that makes me not a big opera fan. To each her own, you know. :)
