Paying the Math Tax
Jun. 17th, 2004 01:54 pmLet me just preface this by saying I have never played the lottery before in my life. (I see you caught the word "before" in that sentence. Very perceptive!)
Ok, so the Texas lottery has increased to around $140M this week, and some of my coworkers are getting excited. They decided to go in together on a bunch of tickets and asked me if I wanted to join for $5. Since this is a small price to pay for solidarity with my poor stressed out team, I handed over my $5. I now have photocopy of 9 tickets purchased between 9 people in my group.
What happens if we win? Would the whole team decide to quit? Scary stuff!
Well, in case anyone is wondering, I would not quit my job if I won the lottery.
No, really!
I like my job. I enjoy what I do, and I enjoy where I do it. I get to play with cool analytical equipment, and I get to see the newest electronics platforms as they are being developed. And sometimes, if I'm lucky, I get to do some real science. It's cool.
No, I think I'd stay. I'd probably take a lot more vacations, and it's likely that I'd retire a lot earlier, but I wouldn't up and quit.

what would you do with $8M?
Jun. 17th, 2004 04:51 pmIf this group does happen to win the lottery (HA!), what would I do with the money?
( Let me think... )
