I spent the past few days in Guadalajara on business. The trip was fabulous, and I believe we were very productive, but I had an experience that is, fortunately, not common for me.
I was there with two people from my company, J and A. Early during the trip we were discussing the current mid-east conflict, and J had made some non-derogatory comment about "the Jews" involved in armed conflict, after which I let slip that I was Jewish. Our last night at dinner, we were talking about the difficulties in working with some of our technicians and she came out with this:
WTF?
I really wanted to tell this woman off, but it would be bad for my career. *glare*
Now, somehow I feel obligated to buy expensive meals to show that "Jews" are not necessarily cheap, specific people are cheap...or thrifty, or smart, or lazy, or emotional. Of course, then I would probably be flaunting my Jewish money, or whatever.
Sometimes people really piss me off.

J: "I worked with a technician once named X, who was so funny. He was Jewish, but really the only Jewish thing about him was that he was...well, really, um...stingy with money." (J goes on to describe several instances where X ordered inexpensive meals or water at restaurants.)
Me: Bland look.
J: (possibly a little flustered) "I mean, he was a great tech, really sharp as a tack, but he just wouldn't spend a dime."
Me: More staring.
J: (changes subject)
